Blepharitis

External Hordeolum (Stye)

Inflammation of the eyelid, which can be caused by infection, seborrhea or rosacea.

Clinical Features

  • Symptoms: burning, itching, deposits or mattering of the lashes and foreign body sensation
  • Signs:
    • Erythema, thickening and telangiectasia of the lid margins
    • May present with angular blepharitis
    • Unstable tear film due to meibomian gland dysfunction
    • May be complicated with superficial punctate keratitis, dry eye symptoms, corneal neovascularization, corneal infiltrates, trichiasis, poliosis and lash loss

Management

  • Warm compresses
  • Lid hygiene
  • Topical antibiotics
  • Topical steroids ointment for recalcitrant cases
