External Hordeolum

External Hordeolum

External Hordeolum is an acute localized inflammation of the lash follicles. It is most commonly caused by Staphylococcus species infection.

Clinical Features

  • Symptoms: localized lid tenderness
  • Signs:
    • Acute onset of lid swelling
    • Visible nodule within the lid with eryhtema of the overlying tissue
    • Pus may sometimes be visible at the glands orifice

Management

  • Warm compress and gentle lid massage
  • Antibiotics ointment such as erythromycin
  • Surgical incision or drainage procedure for chronic cases
