Intravitreous Depo Steroid Injection

Intravitreal depo streroid injection in a patient with refractory diabetic macular edema.
  • Intravitreal steroid injection has been used as an experimental treatment option for various retinal diseases such as:
    • Proliferative vitreoretinopathy
    • Exudative age-related macular degeneration
    • Refractory uveitis
    • Macular edema secondary to central/branch retinal vein occlusion 
    • Birdshot retinochoroidopathy
    • Hypotony
    • Cystoid macular edema
    • Diabetic macular edema
    • Refractory macular edema of various etiologies
  • Proven to be effective and safe without direct toxic effect to the optic nerve and retina.
  • Reinjection may be necessary in refractory cases to achieve better result.
  • Complications may include increased intraocular pressure, development of cataract and endophthalmitis.
