Research

The Department of Medicine is a leader in biomedical research and research training. Columbia researchers have made considerable contributions to the field of medicine, unearthing new areas of discovery in the understanding, diagnosis, and treatment of disease. Our medical breakthroughs include the first blood test for cancer, the first medical use of the laser, and the first successful transfer of genes from one cell to another. Our faculty researchers and trainees share a singular commonality: dedication to caring for patients and advancing modern medicine for the benefit of people everywhere.

The Department’s faculty members lead investigative studies representing the full range of health-related research, including basic science, translational, clinical and epidemiological studies. The Department is consistently among the top 5 in funding from the federal National Institutes of Health. The Department has implemented several initiatives to support the career development of its trainees, as well as its junior faculty and Associate Research Scientists and their career trajectory as successful independent scientists. Our departmental research centers allow faculty, trainees, and staff across campus to collaboratively address areas of common interest to our community.
