Roadmap to Residency
Below please find a highlevel timeline of career resources and the residency application process from MD Year 3 through to Match Day. More details about each phase will be sent to students as deadlines and events approach.
MD Year 3: Fall (October – December)
- October - December: three panels on the residency application process with chairs and program directors from each specialty
- November - December: individual MSPE/career advising meetings with the dean of students
- December: peer career advising group sessions with senior students, organized by specialty, are held for elective planning
MD Year 3: Spring (January - May)
- Early-January: peer career advising group sessions with senior students, organized by specialty, are held for elective planning (continued)
- January: elective registration for February – June
- January - March: individual MSPE/career advising meetings with the dean of students (continued)
- March: peer career advising group sessions with senior students, organized by specialty, are held for insight on residency planning and the application process
- May - June: group advising sessions, organized by specialty, with CUIMC residency program directors
- Late-May: first class meeting on residency applications (ERAS)
MD Year 3: Summer (June – August)
- Early-June: ERAS opens and application tokens are distributed by the Office of Student Affairs; students can begin completing their application, uploading letters of recommendation (LORs), and reviewing program lists with their specialty advisor, advisory dean and the student affairs office
- Late-June:
- American Urological Association (AUA) Match registration opens; students can begin reviewing program lists with their specialty advisor, advisory dean and the student affairs office
- Second class meeting on residency applications (personal statements/CVs)
- Early-July: San Francisco (SF) Match, for ophthalmology applicants, opens; students can begin completing their application, uploading letters of recommendation (LORs), and reviewing program lists with their specialty advisor, advisory dean and the student affairs office
- Late-July: deadline to complete Step 2/CK
- June - August:
- Professional headshots taken through the Office of Student Affairs
- Small group personal statement workshops with faculty advisors
MD Year 4: Fall (September – December)
- Early-September: SF applications are due
- Mid-September:
- Third class meeting on residency applications (interviewing)
- NRMP registration opens
- Mock interviews with current CUIMC residents
- Late-September: ERAS applications are due and are released to programs to start reviewing and offering interviews
- Early-October: The Canadian Resident Matching Service (CaRMS) opens; students can begin completing their application, uploading letters of recommendation (LORs), and reviewing program lists with their specialty advisor, advisory dean and the student affairs office
- Mid-October:
- Military Match application deadline
- SF interview invitations extended
- Late-November: AUA ranking opens
- Mid-December: Military Match results released
- Late-December:
- AUA registration deadline for urology match
- Step 2/CK deadline for MD/PhD and PhD to MD students
MD Year 4: Spring (January - March)
- Mid-January:
- AUA and SF Match rank lists due
- CaRMS application deadline
- Late-January:
- NRMP registraion deadline
- Step 2/CK deadline for OMFS students
- Early-February:
- AUA/SF Match results released
- NRMP ranking opens
- Mid-February: CaRMS ranking opens
