How to Apply

Harlem Hospital Center

All candidates for residency positions must meet the following requirement via the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) for applications:

  • Undergraduate Education/College
  • Medical School
  • Year of Graduation
  • Professional post graduate hospital or institutional experience
  • Social Security Number
  • Two Pictures
  • Results United States Medical Licensing Examination
  • Participation in ERAS system and following their guidelines
  • Standard certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduate, if applicable
  • Test of English as a Foreign Language Exam, if applicable
  • Proof of Citizenship (Birth Certificate or Passport)
  • Permission to work in US or if needed

In addition, each candidate must provide the following:

  • Dean's letter
  • Two letters of recommendation from faculty member of Medical School
  • Medical School Diploma
  • Medical School Transcript
  • College Diploma
  • College Transcript

Additional Criteria

It is the policy of the institution that eligible applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • All US and Canadian medical school graduates must be from Liaison Committee on Medical
  • Education (LCME) accredited medical schools or from a college of osteopathic medicine in the United States, accredited by the American Osteopathic Association Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (AOACOCA); or
  • All graduates from medical schools outside USA and Canada must have a currently valid certificate from the Educational Committee for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) prior to appointment or are fully licensed (with no restriction) to practice medicine in the US Licensing in which the ACGME-accredited program is located
  • All graduates from medical schools outside the USA must have completed a Fifth Pathway program provided by an LCME-accredited medical school
  • All applicants apply through Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS)
  • Applicants are selected and interviewed in December. The final selection is submitted to the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP)

Candidates with above documents shoulde apply through Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) and their applications are reviewed by the Department.

Interviews

After reviewing the applications, the candidates who meet all the requirements are invited for interview by two groups of interviewers. This will be via WebEx and/or in person. Each candidate is interviewed by the faculty. The resident at PGY 4 and PGY 5 levels are involved in the interview process.

The candidates are given a virtual/in person tour of the hospital by the residents and the applicants get the opportunity to talk to these residents on the day of the interview. The candidate is then graded 1-10, with 10 being the highest score.

Matching

The candidates participate in the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP). The candidates are then ranked based on all available information. The program participates in the NRMP for its categorical and preliminary residents.

The Matching Results are obtained in late March and the selected candidates are informed in writing.

If all the positions available are not filled, candidates in the National Residency Matching Program may then be offered a position via the Supplemental Offer and Acceptance Program (SOAP).

Candidate Selection

The candidates are selected based on their ability, aptitude, academic credentials, communication skills and personal qualities such as motivation and integrity. The program does not discriminate with regard to sex, race, age, religion, color, national origin, disability or veteran status.

All candidates prior to entry into the program are notified in writing of their status in the program and the required length of training.
