Continuing Education Course: Management of Lymphedema and Chronic Edema in the Inpatient Setting
This continuing education course is for healthcare professionals interested in learning about the lymphatic system and addressing lymphedema and chronic edema within the unique setting of inpatient care as opposed to the traditionally utilized outpatient model of care. This course will review the anatomy of the lymphatic system, stages of lymphedema, lymphedema vs edema, an introduction to components of Complete Decongestive Therapy, building an inpatient program, populations served, specific case studies and a basic introduction to bandaging techniques and compression garments. Intended audience: Occupational Therapy practitioners, Physical Therapy Practitioners, Registered Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, Physicians and Physician’s Assistants.
This online course is offered for the professional seeking a clear and concise introduction regarding the International Gold Standard treatment method known as Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT) and how to adapt this treatment model in an inpatient setting.
Course objectives - At the conclusion of this session, the participants will:
Understand the role of a health care professional in treating patients with lymphedema and related skin care conditions (such as venous stasis ulcers, hyperkeratosis, fibrosis, etc.) in an inpatient setting.
Differentiate between primary and secondary lymphedema.
Identify interventions appropriate for each stage of lymphedema.
Describe appropriate and realistic options for continuation of care post discharge from the acute care setting.
Identify how lymphedema treatment improves patient quality of life and functionality.
