Resources for Educators
The Virginia Apgar Academy of Medical Educators offers a range of resources for educators.
Teaching Workshops
Join other VP&S faculty to enhance your skills as an educator. Learn about everything from how to plan a class to how to get the most out of a small group to how to use new technologies in the classroom. Have a topic that you’d like to learn about? Let us know! Check our calendar for workshop topics and times.
Faculty Coaching
Are you interested in learning more about your teaching style and thinking about how you might improve it? Get a teaching coach! Coaching has nothing to do with remediation- as Atul Gawande wrote in his article “Personal Best,” top-flight athletes and musicians have coaches – and we should too! A group of faculty members began by coaching each other – sitting in on each other’s classes and “debriefing” to improve the educator’s awareness of his/her teaching style. Now they are ready to sit in on your class to help you.
Here's what one faculty member said about being coached: "The coaching experience was fantastic. My teaching coach provided real-time, immediate feedback that helped me reflect on my teaching style as well as the learning environment that I create for my students. She pointed out my strengths and helped me identify ways to capitalize on them. She also helped me brainstorm ways to improve my teaching through small, but significant changes. It was extremely helpful".
Mentoring by Members
If you’re interested in a career as a clinician educator, Apgar members can help you to develop your educational scholarship by working with you to create educational research projects, think of ideas for presentations and papers, and connect to other medical educators. Contact us to be connected to a mentor.
