Shanna Rock, PT

Overview

Shanna M. Rock has spent over 20 years in the healthcare industry. For the first 15 years, she specialized in healthcare policy, advocacy, business strategy, and marketing communications globally and nationally. In this role, she had the opportunity to hone her relationship, management, and operations skills to drive development of necessary communications platforms for patients, healthcare professionals, and the public. Throughout the last decade, she transitioned to becoming a practicing clinical physical therapist. Having graduated from Columbia University with a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree, Dr. Rock went on to work at New York Presbyterian Weill-Cornell in New York City. While there, her clinical practice focused on the neurological population primarily in the outpatient setting, however covering various acute care needs as needed to support the larger team. Additionally, during the COVID-19 pandemic, she was on the forefront of treatment development, working with both positive patients and eventually those with long-COVID.

Since, Dr. Rock transitioned her practice to Columbia University and is now an Instructor of Clinical Rehabilitation and Regenerative Medicine (Physical Therapy) at Columbia University Irving Medical Center, an educator in the Programs in Physical Therapy, and practicing physical therapist at the Columbia Physical Therapy Faculty Practice in Tarrytown, specializing in delivering individualized physical therapy treatment for patients of all ages, with a particular focus on treating neurological and neuromuscular disorders, such as the specific patient populations of Parkinson's Disease (including LSVT certification), stroke, traumatic brain injury, multiple sclerosis, with and other neurological conditions, as well as supporting those with progressive balance and gait abnormalities.

In addition to this clinical work, she is the course coordinator and primary instructor for several core professional leadership courses focused on Ethics, Communication & Conflict in Physical Therapy, Business Management & Sustainability of Physical Therapy, and COVID-19 treatment and management. She has given talks at Grand Rounds at New York Presbyterian Columbia Medical Center and Weill-Cornell, and for the American Physical Therapy Association on various elements of COVID-19 presentation, research, and treatment. Additionally, she has been active in the Columbia RunLab elective as the Program Manager for over 7 years, helping develop and expand a state-of-the-art offering to runners around the world.

Outside of her work, Dr. Rock and her wife are the loving parents of three dogs and enjoys spending time with her family and friends. In her spare time, she enjoys water sports, cooking, and taking care of her several dozen orchids.
