Sankar Ghosh, PhD
- Silverstein and Hutt Family Professor of Microbiology and Immunology
Overview
Dr. Sankar Ghosh is the Chairman and Silverstein & Hutt Family Professor of the Department of Microbiology & Immunology at Columbia University Irving Medical Center. An Indian-American immunologist and biochemist, he earned his Ph.D. from Albert Einstein College of Medicine and his M.S. and B.S. from Calcutta University. In 2024, he was elected a Fellow of the Asian American Academy of Science & Engineering (AAASE).
Dr. Ghosh is best known for his groundbreaking work on NF-kB, a transcription factor central to immune response and inflammation. His research has advanced understanding of NF-kB regulation and function, including the cloning of NF-kB and IkB proteins, revealing critical regulatory pathways, and contributing to the first structural studies of NF-kB. His work has impacted fields such as immunology, cancer biology, and molecular pathology, with recent research focusing on innate immune signaling, mitochondria's role in macrophage ROS production, and pharmacological approaches targeting NF-kB in inflammatory diseases and cancer.
