Student Events - Fall

October was Physical Therapy Month, and in celebration, with the help of our DPT students we launched a mini web series on Instagram called PT WORKS. Our students collaborated to design simple, effective exercises that CUIMC students and employees can incorporate into their daily routines. The goal of this initiative is to encourage everyone to get up and move-especially since so many employees spend their entire day at their desks. Our students have developed creative, desk friendly exercises that make it easy to stay active throughout the day. You can catch the series on our instagram page, we will be doing these shorts throughout the year!

Our DPT IIIs and Social Justice Committee hosted a potluck in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month! The event was a huge success, featuring a fun trivia session and an variety of delicious, authentic dishes brought in by students. During the potluck, students shared the stories and history behind the dishes they prepared. A big thank you to Angelica Coleman, Katie Gonzalez, Josephine Martinez, and Joanna Samuel for making it all happen!

Columbia University Doctor of Physical Therapy Black Student Union (BSU) welcomed our first meeting this semester and it was a success! In our first meeting, we discussed the purpose and the mission statement of BSU. Purpose: "To create a safe, collaborative and fun environment for students of all backgrounds to learn about Black experience in academia, pop culture in addition to providing resources to underserved members". Mission statement: "To promote an environment where students of similar race and ethnic backgrounds African American, Afro-Caribbean, Afro-Latin, and African descent (ALL ARE WELCOME) can create community and resources". BSU further discussed allocation of resources in addition to playing creative games and ice breakers to initiate a collaborative alliance between all three classes. BSU continuously welcomes all of their future meetings. The next meeting will be held in the new year, 2025. Right now, BSU is actively pursuing new members (alumni, student, and staff) and is open to collaborating with other student clubs/ organizations. If you would like to get involved, please contact Sarena Williams (sw3743@cumc.columbia.edu) and Lauryn King (lk2940@cumc.columbia.edu).

The DPT IIIs hosted the inaugural PT Olympics as a fundraiser for PT Prom, and it was a huge success with participation from all three classes and faculty. Prizes included a round of golf with Dr. Said, Swinglab analysis, a cookie shop tour in NYC with Dr. Said and friends, a framed autographed self-portrait of Dr. Said with gonimeters, RunLab analysis with Dr. Brough and team, a private reformer Pilates session, personal training session, and various gift cards. The even featured fun challenges like a Wheelchair Obstacle Course Relay, DF Wrap Assist/Crutch Race, Sit-to-Stand competition, Anatomy Game Show, and Single Leg Balance Marathon.

Although the DPT IIs were initially crowned winners, a recount revealed that the faculty were the winners!

The DPT IIs and DPT IIIs clashed in an intense and electrifying basketball game! What began as a potential blowout in the first half quickly turned into a fierce, physical battle after halftime. Shoutout to Bilal, the game's MVP, who put on a "Kobe-esque" performance-his words. At one point he told Andre and Dakambay, "Im staying on", he had something to prove that Friday. Huge shoutout to Gabe and the rest of the organizers who made this event happen-even though the pregame stretches didn't quite do the trick, they still gave it their all. The game was fun, and our IIs and IIIs went above and beyond, making posters to cheer on their favorite players-some of which you can see in the gallery below!
