SDoH Workshop Explores AI-Driven Approaches Aimed at Optimizing Patient Outcomes, Shaping Policies
On Thursday, August 22, Columbia Business School’s Think Bigger Innovation Hub and the Irving Institute for Clinical and Translational Research co-hosted an AI-driven Social Determinants of Health (SDoH) innovation workshop, convening experts, practitioners, and thought leaders to explore AI-driven approaches aimed at optimizing patient outcomes and shaping future health policy. The day began with welcome remarks by Sheena Iyengar, PhD, and Muredach P. Reilly, MBBCh, MSCE, followed by an overview of the problem presented by Jide Williams MD, MS, and Noémie Elhadad, PhD.
Throughout the morning, expert presentations provided diverse perspectives on SDoH, addressing critical factors such as economic stability, education, social and community context, healthcare access, and the built environment. Notable speakers, including Debbian Fletcher-Blake, Patricia Peretz, and Alex Lipton, shared insights into community health and the transformative role of AI and technology in healthcare delivery. The session continued with a demonstration of the Choice Mapper tool by Sheena Iyengar, which showcased innovative strategies to generate actionable ideas.
During the working lunch, participants engaged in breakout groups to develop and reflect on new strategies for addressing complex health challenges. Afternoon sessions featured group presentations and discussions moderated by Jide Williams and Noémie Elhadad, synthesizing key insights and emphasizing the potential of AI to understand and mitigate health disparities. The event concluded with evaluations and feedback, underscoring the collaborative effort’s commitment to driving actionable insights for the future of healthcare.
