Pioneering Hearing at Columbia: A Century of Evolution and a Decade of Transformation
Columbia University has a storied legacy in hearing healthcare that dates back to the 1940s, when Dr. Edmund Fowler and his colleagues revolutionized the field by developing the first audiometers and making significant discoveries in auditory mechanics. This tradition of innovation continues today as our faculty spearheads groundbreaking research in various aspects of auditory science. Key areas of focus include the impact of hearing loss on cognitive function, advancements in gene therapy for hearing impairment, and optimizing outcomes for cochlear implant patients.
Under the visionary leadership of Dr. Lawrence Lustig, who has served as department chair for the past decade, Columbia’s hearing healthcare team has flourished. Last year, under the leadership of Dr. Megan Kuhlmey and Dr. Ana Kim, the team achieved a significant milestone by performing over 100 cochlear implant procedures. Alongside this achievement, Dr. Jessica Galatioto and her team of skilled audiologists continue to offer our patients hearing aids incorporating the latest technological advancements. Dr. Lustig’s commitment to collaboration has fostered an extraordinary team that encompasses surgeons employing cutting-edge techniques, audiologists dedicated to accurate hearing assessments and personalized technology solutions, speech therapists aiding patients to hear and speak, as well as social workers and coordinators committed to providing seamless and compassionate care. “Our approach emphasizes teamwork and community,” Dr. Lustig stated. “The most important members of our ‘village’ are, of course, our patients and their families, who are integral to the care journey.”
As we reflect on our rich history and the transformative decade under Dr. Lustig’s leadership, Columbia is excited about the future of hearing healthcare. We look forward to celebrating many more milestones and breakthroughs in the years to come.
