Student News

• Third-year VP&S student Paul Lewis received honorable mention for an essay he submitted in the American Medical Student Association and ABIM Foundation inaugural Building Trust Essay Contest. Medical students across the nation were asked to write about how they built, lost, or restored trust in a health care setting. The essay submitted by Mr. Lewis is available online(link is external and opens in a new window).
• VP&S student Will Savage, a former minor league baseball player, wrote an op-ed about the new NFL concussion protocol and his own experience with concussions. Read more(link is external and opens in a new window).

VP&S and CUIMC News

• Read about the VP&S orthopedic surgeon who is head team physician for the New York Yankees.
• An inaugural summit at CUIMC celebrated diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. Read more.
• Sankar Ghosh, PhD, chair of microbiology & immunology, was elected to the National Academy of Medicine. Read more.
• First Lady Jill Biden and Spain’s Queen Letizia visited Columbia to learn about the Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center. Read more.
• Project Medical Education returned in person this year, and local residents, community leaders, and policymakers spent a day on campus to learn about day-to-day activities at CUIMC. Read more.

Of Historic Interest

• The National Library of Medicine held a day-long virtual scientific symposium to honor the legacy of Donald A.B. Lindberg’58. The symposium was live streamed. A recording of the symposium can be found here(link is external and opens in a new window). Alan Schechter’63 said the symposium showed the impact of Dr. Lindberg’s contributions. “Even I—who knew him moderately—really did not appreciate his gigantic contributions to medicine as we know it now. I and others focused on NIH history think that he may well have been one of the half-dozen people who had the biggest influence on the NIH in the last half century.” The symposium keynote address was the NLM’s annual Lindberg-King Lecture, which also honors Donald West King, MD, former deputy director for research and education for the National Library of Medicine and former chair of pathology at VP&S.
• The Adirondack Daily Enterprise featured Edward Livingston Trudeau’1871 on the 174th anniversary of his birthday. Read more(link is external and opens in a new window).

• Duke Health established a new chancellor’s professorship to recognize Duke School of Medicine faculty members who have achieved the highest level of excellence and impact in scientific discovery and its translation. Robert Lefkowitz’66 is the inaugural recipient of the professorship. Read more(link is external and opens in a new window).

• George Hripcsak’85 will receive the 2022 Morris F. Collen Award of Excellence from the American College of Medical Informatics during the opening session of the group’s 2022 symposium. Read more(link is external and opens in a new window). 
• P.
